Keane interview for "The Sun"

Keane plot big Warchild gig
In Iraq one child dies every five minutes.
Six hundred and fifty five thousand children have lost their lives as a result of the conflict in the country.
And 8.2 million Iraqis are dependent on food rations.
It’s these shocking statistics that prompted Keane to pledge all they could to help charity Warchild.
“We’re not the kind of people who turn up to the opening of an envelope,” says frontman TOM CHAPLIN. “We feel if we’re going to get involved in anything we need to feel passionate about it. We have no fear in sticking our necks out and telling our fans about just what is going on in Iraq.”
The piano-bashing trio of TIM RICE-OXLEY, Tom and RICHARD HUGHES are the proud ambassadors of Warchild’s Iraq appeal.
All proceeds from a pair of shows, Manchester Apollo on October 31 and Brixton Academy on November 1, will go to the charity.
Profits from new single The Night Sky will be handed over too.
And it’s the charity’s dedication that particularly attracted Chaplin.
He says: “What we feel is so great about Warchild is that while everybody else, especially in the south of Iraq, seem to be quitting, Warchild is the one international child support agency that is remaining there and is offering what is basically the only solution left.
"Without Warchild, that’s it. There won’t be any support for many many children, so that’s why we feel it’s an absolute must that this campaign works out.”

I'd actually lost the ability to write ’Tom Chaplin

The threesome have set themselves an audacious fund-raising target, as Richard explains: “The aim is to raise £1.5 million to fund a three year campaign in Iraq, which will help a quarter of a million people.
“Hopefully, between the two shows we should get £100,000 through ticket sales alone. And the same goes for the single.”
The gigs themselves are set to be starry affairs. While the Manchester date will see the multi-platinum chart champs headline on their own, the London show will see a raft of talents take to the stage.
Pet Shop Boys, The Magic Numbers, The Guillemots, Teddy Thompson and more will all be performing on the night.
And Tom secured their agreement through a novel and surprisingly complicated means.
“We actually sent hand-written letters out to people,” he revealed. “That was a bit of a challenge because I discovered I’d actually lost the ability to write by hand.
“Obviously some people said no, mainly because they were on tour, but in the main people said yes. We were very flattered with the response.
“I think Warchild has had an incredible effect on music. But I also think, especially at this point in time, given the mess and controversy that surrounds Britain’s involvement in Iraq, that a lot of people feel strongly that it would be nice to do something positive.
“It’s definitely gathered momentum very quickly.”

Warchild managing director MARK WADDINGTON adds: “What we’re using this show for is to gain as wide an audience as we can for the Iraq appeal. People can donate money by texting child to 88818 and people can also pledge their support on the website www.warchildiraqappeal.com.”
Pet Shop Boys NEIL TENNANT and CHRIS LOWE have a special significance for the trio.
“Without them there would be no Keane,” states Richard. “They’re the band that made (songwriter) Tim first listen to music. All of the people on the bill we admire hugely.”
“I don’t feel like it’s a headline gig,” adds Tom. “I like to think of it as Keane presents. We just want to bring all these people together. It’s wonderful how all these musicians are converging in a selfless way to do something.
“We feel we’re part of a bigger picture when it comes to this show. In some ways I’m quite terrified about having to introduce all these people and I hope that we do our best and don’t make an embarrassment of ourselves.”
The single itself, The Night Sky, marks a radical departure in terms of Keane’s songwriting. It’s written from the perspective of a small child affected by conflict.

I'm quite terrified and hope we don't make an embarassment of ourselves ’Tom Chaplin

Tom explains: “Obviously we, with western news programmes often see the reporter in front of a building with a bit of smoke in the distance and you don’t get a feel for what it must be like.
“The people who feel that sense of despair and fear the most must be the children who are in those war zones.
“That was something that really interest us and provided the germ for that song.”
The frontman sees himself following in the footsteps of global campaigners like BONO and BOB
Single artwork ... Under The Night Sky
GELDOF.
He adds: “A lot of bands have been scared off by some negative reactions there’ve been.
“Two of the biggest campaigners around are Bono and Bob Geldof and they consistently seem to come in for a lot of stick.
“As far as I’m concerned they’re doing unbelievably brilliant work and trying hard to battle against governments who basically lie and cheat and don’t fulfil their promises.
“Whether it’s tunnel vision I just see the goal, which is raising money for Warchild and having a huge influence on many lives.”

Tim interview: last part

TIM: FANS' INTERVIEW PT 3
11.10.07 | 04.29.pm
Part three of our exclusive interview with Tim

ANDREW: How do you view Tom as a frontman now? I remember reading that you rated him as one of the best around.
TIM: In order to have that ability to really martial a crowd and race around a stadium, you’ve got to have an incredible amount of energy, and probably some sort of, um, weirdness in your mental make-up! I think it’s an incredible gift that Tom has, but there’s always another side to it. For all of the energy he puts into the band performances, he has to balance that with really retreating. And I think he also feels he’s out there being scrutinised so much of the time, that when he retreats into his shell it’s hard for people who don’t have some sort of emotional access to break down that wall.

CHRIS: He’s a showman at the end of the day.
TIM: Yeah! He feels it so much, he’s a very very passionate and emotional person. But a lot of that gets put into music and again performing, and it’s just like he needs to retreat from it sometimes in order to do that.

TIM: FANS' INTERVIEW PT 4
12.10.07 | 03.30.pm
The final part of our exclusive in-depth interview
CHRIS: Obviously there’s an element of performance when you’re on stage – would you say there’s an element of performance in your writing, or is everything completely true to life?

TIM: My personal approach, and I think our approach as a band, is it should be true to life. It’s funny - I’m constantly amazed by the amount of people that want to take on a different persona for a song - although there are great albums like 'Nebraska' by Bruce Springsteen which are full of those songs, so it obviously has a lot of merit. But the thing that really amazes me is when people say that they don’t want to write about certain things because they’re personal. I even hear people criticising songwriters for being too personal, which seems very, very odd to me. My view is that the closer to the bone it is, the better. That’s where all the good songs come out.

TIM: FANS' INTERVIEW PT1

09.10.07 | 03.33.pm
Exclusive interview between Tim and two Keane fans

CHRIS: How do you approach your songwriting? Do you have a work ethic where you think ‘I’m going to sit down and write a song’, or is it more relaxed waiting for it to come to you?

TIM: I spend most of my life in a stew because I don’t get enough time to write songs. I’m constantly trying to make time to write songs. It’s funny, because I’m always convinced that I haven’t written any songs and get in a big panic and then, when I think about it, I’ll remember bits of songs and suddenly realise that there’s 50 of them rattling around my head that I need to finish. I do write a lot of stuff that pops into my head, and often that’s the catchiest stuff. I don’t know if I’d say it’s categorically the best stuff, but if I’m walking around London and I can remember something without having a tape recorder handy, that’s usually a good sign. I like writing in the morning, and my favourite time to write is definitely late in the evening, which is what I tend to do when I’m at home - just lock myself away and write until the small hours. It’s definitely the most magical time for writing.

More News about : The Night Sky

Keane record new track for War Child
Keane have recorded a brand new single in support of conflict-zone charity War Child - and you can listen to it right now, weeks ahead of its official release on 29 October.

While not an explicitly political song, The Night Sky nonetheless strikes a suitably redemptive note of hope and fortitude, with Chaplin’s stirring lyrics (“We’ll release this town from all the people who try to knock it down”) underwired by chilly, echoing keyboard stabs.

The single is part of Keane’s wider commitment to support War Child’s work in Iraq providing aid to children affected by the war. On 1 November the band will play a special fund-raising gig at London’s Brixton Academy. Also on the bill, which has been assembled by the band themselves, will be The Magic Numbers, Pet Shop Boys, Lily Allen, Guillemots, Brendan Benson and Teddy Thompson, with more special guests to be announced. You can buy tickets here.

The Brixton gig is preceded by five nights of smaller warm-up shows in North London, showcasing up-and-coming bands. Keane also play a headline gig at Manchester Apollo on 31 October.

Some key facts:

*One child in Iraq dies every 5 minutes because of the war.
*An estimated 1.5million children have been displaced in Southern Iraq, many of whom are denied access to basic health, education, shelter, water and sanitation.
*Nearly 50% of the children in southern Iraq do not go to school.

Listen to The Night Sky here.

Interview with "The Night Sky" Video Director

What does it entail?
Well, in between directing various music videos, I've run various animation workshops, for all ages from primary school up to degree level. I'm always quite amazed with the results. They always have a certain look and charm about them, because they're made by children or people learning for the first time. They come up with such brilliant angles and weird ideas. I heard that the band probably weren't going to be in the video for 'The Night Sky', so we thought making the video using one of these workshops would be a good way of linking to War Child. So we're doing a four day model and shadow puppet animation workshop, with a group of 12 children aged around 13 and 14 from a school in London. The video will come out of that.

Is there a plot to the video?
Sort of. But I didn't want to go in there and say, "Right, this is the idea that I want to make, now go and do it". I wanted it to come as much from them as possible. So I came in with a workshop structure and a loose narrative, with the starting point being the War Child side of things. We actually got two representatives of War Child to give a talk and I put together some information packs on four of their projects, in Iraq, Afghanistan and DR Congo. And that started to inspire the children, as did the lyrics to the song, which we'd typed up. So the walls are covered in inspiration from different angles. Some of it's pretty dark and quite horrific, because that's what War Child's work can involve.

Are there characters in the video?
Yes, they must have made over 20 characters now. So in terms of the narrative, it's to do with War Child and Uganda and Iraq and the night sky. And it'll be threaded through with a documentary which we're also shooting of the whole workshop.

So the kids will appear in the actual video?
That's the idea at the moment. I don't wanna say too much, because things can change when you edit stuff, but in theory we're making a documentary-like film about these children making the animations. So we'll probably have an animated video within a documentary within the whole video, if that makes sense.

Will the animated models lip synch along to the track?
No. But we are toying with the idea of there being Keane puppets in it. There may well be. In which case, there might be crude lip-synching. But the children are in groups of three and they've all come up with one or two narratives, so we'll see which ones we end up using.

Will it resemble 'Bedshaped' at all?
Not really, although it will involve a similar, old-fashioned style of animation. I'm steering it, but I want to let it evolve it's own natural way. I haven't gone in and said how I want it to look, I'm just helping them achieve a certain standard or level. I think the way it's being made will be very much part of the charm.

Of course, Keane have played a big part in your career.
Yes, the first big video I did was the 'Somewhere Only We Know' one where I did them walking through the forest and the creatures around the pond. That started things off for me, then 'Bedshaped' came a few months later. So it's really nice to be working with them again.
