Tom Chaplin: Question

Tom Chaplin

HOW DO YOU ACTUALLY RECORD YOUR VOCALS?

TOM: "Actually, it was interesting... the way we started doing them when we were in Paris and then when we were in Berlin, we were doing it on very expensive microphones and it was like, try not to whack that microphone or even touch it, 'cos it was like 60 years old and costs 20,000 quid or something. And you're sort of in vocal booth thats separated from the control room, and it had a kind of... it just had a slightly impersonal feeling- and as anyone who's seen us live will know, I like to perform, I like to... I feel like the physical side of it is very important and I think that kind of thing does translate onto a record.

So, in the end what we decided to do was just get my old little vocal mic that I use on-stage, just plug it straight in the desk and stand in the control room and just sing it with the speakers turned up... which most producers and engineers would start crying at that point, because... well, to put it simply, it basically means that the stuff thats coming out of the speakers gets recorded back through the mic as well as your voice and so it creates a bit of a headache - but what it gives you is something much more important, on the positive side, which is it gave me the ability to be in the control room with Jake, who's engineering the record, and Tim and Richard and Jesse, and to actually perform to them and to make it a real performance each time. That kind of really buoyed me up and just added another dimension to what I was doing... and its a technique that y'know, people like Bono and Bjork and people like that have used in the past, and I thought "Well, if it works for them, then it should work for us!" and I think... I really truly believe that all these songs, and hopefully my vocals as well, have taken another big leap forward as a result."

New Keane album 'almost done'

New Keane album 'almost done'Monday, June 16 2008, 16:06 BST
By Simon Reynolds, Entertainment Reporter

Keane pianist Tim Rice-Oxley has revealed that the band have almost finished recording their third album.

In a posting on Keane's official website, he said the record will be "hypnotic and ethereal" and compared one unnamed track to Simon & Garfunkel.

"It's begging to burst into some kind of 'Only Living Boy in New York'-style [background vocal] extravaganza at the end," he said.

Rice-Oxley also revealed that a musical saw, which he first heard in the film Delicatessen, would feature prominently on the album.

"We've had brilliant musical saw players down to play, and it does sound utterly hypnotic and ethereal," he commented.

Listen : Tom answers the fans

Q. Hi Tom. The band have been having a few weeks off from recording. Have you enjoyed the break?

Well its been a good break actually, I think, 'cos you get a little bit stir-crazy - we sort of went pretty hard at it for a few weeks after we got back from Berlin, just 'cos I think we got to that stage were we thought "Well, we're nearly there" y'know... itd be nice to sort of cross the finishing line in terms of getting everything sort of recorded. So yeah, a few weeks off is good I think, just to get some distance from the songs.

Keane to go glam?

Keane to go glam?
Trio consider Marlene Dietrich-inspired new look
May 12, 2008

Keane have joked they are going glam during sessions for their third album.
The band are currently recording in Berlin, and on his blog at Keanemusic.com keyboard player Tim Rice-Oxley has explained the group have been inspired to opt for a more sophisticated look when they finally finish.

"Our new policy for this session was to have old films projected onto the big screen in the control room, to inspire us as we worked," he wrote. "I brought in my collection of Marlene Dietrich classics and made everyone watch 'Blonde Venus' on a loop for two days. By the end of that we'd decided that sparkling lapels and foot-long cigarette holders had to be the look for the next tour."

The star added that the film inspired them while working on five songs, though eventually the choice of film on the projector proved a bit of a distraction.

He said: "It all worked wonderfully until we hit a wall of exhaustion on Saturday afternoon and found ourselves helplessly mesmerised by Ingrid Bergman in 'The Inn Of The Sixth Happiness'."

Rice-Oxley added that the band would now regroup, though he was feeling a bit frazzled by the sessions.

"Work continues tomorrow. Are we entering the final stretch or just getting started?" he asked. "My head is spinning and I have no idea."
